Hilton Hotel Portsmouth belonged to one of the most prestigious hotel chains in the world. The hotel with 120 bedrooms had major problems regarding its 25-year-old central heating and domestic hot water pipework systems becoming partially blocked with internal corrosion. The facility needed to flush out to solve the issues, such as deteriorated heat exchanger efficiency. Still, a maintenance manager was very concerned about carrying out a flush-out because it could trigger other problems within the pipes since various types of chemicals had been dosed to those pipelines.
The hotel then installed two Pipetector PT-150DS on six-inch header pipes within the pipelines to protect them from internal corrosion.
After 21 weeks, iron-ion content in the central heating water considerably dropped to 0.292 mg/ℓ from 37.55 mg/ℓ, and the water discoloration also drastically improved from 150 mg/ℓPlatinum-Cobalt Scale to 4 mg/ℓ Platinum-Cobalt Scale. After 22 weeks, iron-ion content further sunk to 0.276mg/ℓ, and the discoloration also improved to 0.7 mg/ℓ Platinum-Cobalt Scale.
After 33 days, iron-ion content in the domestic hot water was drastically reduced to 0.007 mg/ℓ from 5.97 mg/ℓ. It was further reduced to 0.045 mg/ℓ after 78 days. These results are far below the British standard of drinking water quality set at 0.2 mg/ℓ. The improvements in both iron-ion contents and water discoloration mean Pipetector reduced the existing corrosion into magnetite, which does not dissolve in water, and prevented the new formation of internal corrosion. Pipetector will protect inside pipes from any internal corrosion as long as the hotel’s life duration.
After 33 days, Pipetector terminated a moderate number of single-cell bacteria, flagellated protozoa, and ciliated protozoa as Pipetector reduced the internal corrosion that supports any biological organism to thrive.
