Case study at the Royal Bank of Scotland

Inside our plumbing systems

Do you know the current state of the plumbing system in your home? Most of us will probably be like, “I don’t know,” or “I’ve never thought of it.” You may only pay attention to it when something unusual happens. However, plumbing is also part of your home. If it is not kept in proper condition, it can potentially cause a disruption to our daily lives, such as discoloration and leakage of the tap water. The cost of repairing and fixing degraded pipes isn’t cheap, so it is crucial to take care of them despite the fact we don’t usually see them.

Now let’s talk about iron dissolved in water. Even if discolored water is not noticeable, you might have been consuming tap water with a high iron content for a while. Excessive intake of iron has a great impact on our health, especially on infants, so we don’t like to drink it. NMR Pipetector, developed by Japan System Planning Co., is the most effective solution to those issues.

In this column, we describe the episode at the Royal Bank of Scotland as a successful case study of NMR Pipetector.

Be careful with the "plumbing" in your home!

What is RBS? – background-

NMR Pipetector led to a significant cost reduction at the Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS), one of the UK’s leading megabanks, whose head office is located in Edinburg, the capital of Scotland.

RBS has had a history of nearly 280 years since it was established in 1722 by a charter from King George I.

The bank, which used to be one of the semi-major banks in Scotland, continued to grow through a series of mergers and acquisitions as its drastic expansion policy. In 2000, it succeeded in acquiring National Westminster Bank.

The bank’s activities are not limited to the UK but have also expanded to the US, Russia, and Japan. In the US, the bank particularly increased its influence by acquiring The Citizen Bank in NY and Mellon Financial Co., establishing its position as a universal bank in the world.

Bank spearheading the time

RBS has been keen on implementing new systems. In 1985, it established a unique car insurance system that sold insurance on the telephone for the first time in the world. This new sales system was a complete game-changer in the car insurance business.

RBS was also one of the first of its kind to adopt direct banking services, which have now become commonplace in the world. In 1997, it launched the UK’s first full online services. RBS has acquired and merged with more than 200 banks throughout its history as a pioneer leading the industries with innovative ideas.

Under the circumstances, RBS is now facing a major turning point. The bank announced it will change its name to the National Westminster Bank between 2026 and 2030. This is the beginning of a new story.

I would like to emphasize the bank’s policy that plays an important role in terms of environmental protection. As one of the leading financial institutions in the UK, the bank launched an environmental protection policy to reduce the use of chemicals for the pipes as much as possible. The world’s first chemical-free facility operation was put into practice.

NMR Pipetector in the city of Bishopsgate

RBS Branch No. 250 is located near Liverpool Street Station in Bishopgate, north-east of London. The city of Bishopsgate showcases a touch of British history and modernity blended while attracting the public as a trend-setting area for fashion and art. The branch, located in the city, has a dark gray appearance with a touch of modernity. After 18 years have passed since the construction, issues regarding red rust in the air-conditioned heating water pipes emerged. The bank had used anti-corrosive chemicals to prevent the issues, however, due to the expensive costs and environmental concerns caused by the rust inhibitors, the bank stopped using the chemicals and instead installed NMR Pipetector on the piping in March 2018. At that time, red rust was severely dissolving in the heating water, causing discoloration to it.

Results of NMR Pipetector implementation

The effect of installing the NMR Pipetector appeared immediate. The iron content in the hot water, which was 1.1 mg/ℓ before installing NMR Pipetector, dropped to 0.41 mg/ℓ nine weeks later. The red rust development in the pipes also stopped, and the existing red rust was converted to black rust from its surface. The red rust was no longer leaching into the water. A year later, the level further dropped to 0.03 mg/ℓ, about 1/30 of the original level. With these outcomes, NMR Pipetector proved itself that it could solve the problems of red rust without replacing pipes.

Advantages of NMR Pipetector

Let’s look again at the benefits of NMR Pipetector. At RBS, red rust stopped dissolving in the water as well as the new development of red rust. There is no need to worry about red rust anymore.

Is that the only benefit NMR Pipetector has brought to the bank? Well, it’s not. There is another side of black rust. The pipes, which were once corroded with red rust and thus brittle, were coated with black rust. The black rust coating increases the pipe’s integrity and can extend the tubes’ lifespan expectancy.

The cost of replacing many aged pipes is enormous. But because RBS adopted NMR Pipetector, the bank greatly benefited from NMR Pipetector successfully cutting the costs of plumbing.

For our future

I believe such an epoch-making company adopting NMR Pipetector is quite meaningful. As of April 2020, our company’s mindset towards the environment developed even more.

In addition to the product’s cost merit, we started to take a proactive approach to environmental preservation, joining RBS. We hope it will greatly inspire other companies towards the same goal.

NMR Pipetector can be installed not only at large public/commercial buildings but also at apartments and condos. The NMR’s lasting effectiveness will bring long-term peace of mind to your home. It isn’t too late to begin dealing with water discoloration and other red rust-related issues.
